Sawbridgeworth sits in a pleasant spot on the edge of the Stort Valley, right where Hertfordshire meets Essex. It’s a town that still feels like a town, built around a traditional core of timber-framed buildings and the flint-walled Great St. Mary’s Church. Geographically, it’s defined by the River Stort and the navigation canal, which provides a steady route for walkers and narrowboats heading toward Bishop’s Stortford or down toward Harlow. Historically, the area was shaped by the malting industry - a legacy you can still see in the converted maltings near the railway station - and the world-renowned Rivers Nursery, which operated here for centuries and developed many famous fruit varieties. It is practical for getting around, with the M11 nearby and a railway station on the West Anglia Main Line linking it directly to London Liverpool Street and Cambridge. Despite its proximity to Stansted Airport, it manages to maintain a quieter, more settled character than some of its larger neighbours, supported by a decent spread of independent shops, local schools, and the expansive green space of Pishiobury Park.
