Saundersfoot sits on the Pembrokeshire coast, tucked just around the headland from its larger neighbour, Tenby. Unlike many hilltop coastal villages, the heart of Saundersfoot is built on level ground right against the shoreline, which makes it an easy place to navigate on foot. Historically, the village was a busy industrial port used for exporting high-quality anthracite coal from local mines, and you can still see traces of this past in the tunnels along the coastal path towards Wiseman’s Bridge, which were originally carved out for the horse-drawn dramroads. Today, the harbour is the focal point of daily life, but it remains a functional space for a small fishing fleet rather than just a decorative backdrop. The village is well-provided for with a primary school, a pharmacy, and a proper butcher, alongside a decent variety of independent shops that stay open year-round. While the population swells in the height of summer, the community is deeply rooted, and the geography of the valley affords many of the residential streets a sheltered position away from the prevailing South Westerly winds.
