Porton is a quiet, linear village tucked into the Bourne Valley, about five miles northeast of Salisbury. It sits along the River Bourne, where the chalk downs begin to rise toward the edge of Salisbury Plain. Most people recognise the name because of the nearby Science Park and the MOD’s Porton Down, but the village itself is a separate, much older entity, mentioned in the Domesday Book as *Portone*. Today, it functions as a working community centered around the village hall, a local surgery, and a small primary school. The housing is an unpretentious mix of flint-and-brick cottages and more modern residential infill, following the lane that tracks the valley floor. It’s well-placed for getting into Salisbury via the A338, though it still feels very much part of the rural landscape, with plenty of public footpaths heading out across the surrounding fields and ridges.
