Old Sarum sits on a high chalk spur about two miles north of Salisbury city centre, a spot defined by the massive earthworks of the Iron Age hillfort that eventually became the site of the original cathedral and Norman castle. Today, the historic site is managed by English Heritage, but the surrounding locality has evolved into a residential area popular for its balance of open space and proximity to the city. To the south, the terrain drops away toward the Victoria Park neighbourhood and the River Avon, while to the north and east, the landscape opens up into the rolling fields of the Salisbury Plain. The area is also known for its operational grass airfield, one of the best-preserved from the First World War era, which adds a distinct character to the local skyline with its vintage hangars and light aircraft. Living here means navigating the busy A345 for commutes into town, but the trade-off is immediate access to extensive downland walks and a sense of elevation that offers some of the clearest views of the Salisbury Cathedral spire anywhere in the county.
