Amesbury is a town defined by its unique geography, tucked into a meander of the River Avon on the edge of the undulating Salisbury Plain. While it is internationally famous for having Stonehenge on its doorstep, day-to-day life is more anchored in its role as a regional hub for the surrounding villages and the nearby military garrisons at Larkhill and Bulford. It is a place of significant longevity, with archaeological evidence at Vespasian’s Camp suggesting it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the country. Locally, the town centre offers a mix of flint-walled cottages and more functional modern developments, with a range of independent shops and essential amenities that mean you don't always have to make the eight-mile trip south into Salisbury. The landscape here is open and expansive, offering plenty of walking routes along the river meadows or up towards the chalk downs, though the proximity of the A303 remains a persistent practical reality of the town’s connectivity.
