Romford sits in a practical spot where the dense suburbs of East London begin to give way to the greener edges of Essex. Historically a prominent market town, its identity is still anchored by the market that has occupied the town centre since 1247, though today it feels more like a bustling commercial hub defined by its sprawling shopping centres and nightlife. Geographically, it’s the administrative heart of Havering, well-connected by the Great Eastern Main Line which gets you into Liverpool Street in about 25 minutes, or further out towards the coast. Since the arrival of the Elizabeth line, the station has become a much busier focal point, linking the town directly to the West End and Heathrow. While the town centre is high-density and urban, you don’t have to head far toward places like Gidea Park or Havering-atte-Bower to find more open, wooded spaces and a much quieter pace of life.
