Marehay sits just south of Ripley, though it has long since grown to meet its larger neighbour. Historically, the village was shaped by the local coal mining and brick-making industries, and you can still see traces of this industrial past in the older terraced housing that lines the main road. Today, it serves as a quiet, primarily residential spot that benefits from being slightly removed from the town centre while remaining practical for daily life. The village is home to a local primary school and a couple of long-standing pubs, which act as the main hubs for the community. Its geography is one of its strongest points; it occupies an elevated position that offers surprisingly clear views across the Amber Valley, and the proximity to the A38 makes it a straightforward base for those needing to head toward Derby or Mansfield. Despite its proximity to Ripley, Marehay retains its own distinct identity, anchored by the local recreation ground and a slower pace than the town just up the hill.
