Retford is a traditional market town in North Nottinghamshire, positioned at the edge of the Idle Valley and surrounded by rolling agricultural land. It is one of the oldest boroughs in the country, and as you walk through the town centre, the wide, Georgian Market Square gives a real sense of its history as a busy coaching hub between London and York. Today, the town remains exceptionally well-connected; it sits right on the East Coast Main Line, meaning you can be in London King’s Cross in about an hour and twenty minutes, and is just a few minutes’ drive from the A1. For those who prefer a slower pace, both the River Idle and the Chesterfield Canal wind through the town, providing green corridors that lead out toward the Wetlands Nature Reserve. Life here tends to revolve around the local independent shops and the award-winning Kings Park, which serves as a central hub for families and walkers, bridging the gap between the town’s ancient roots and its practical, modern-day utility.
