Rainham sits on the edge of the Medway, where the suburban sprawl of the towns begins to give way to the more open landscapes of North Kent. It’s defined by its geography; the A2 Roman road runs right through the middle, and the town is tucked between the busy motorway corridor to the south and the quiet, tidal marshes of the Medway Estuary to the north. At Riverside Country Park, you get a real sense of the area’s history, looking out over the salt marshes that were once vital for the local cement and brick-making industries. The town centre is practical and functional, clustered around the railway station which links directly to London Victoria and St Pancras. It feels a bit slower than nearby Gillingham or Chatham, with the housing stretching up the hills towards the North Downs. It’s a place where you can be on a high-speed train in the morning and out walking through orchards or along the shoreline by the afternoon.
