Portsmouth is unique among British cities for being situated almost entirely on Portsea Island, which gives it a distinct, self-contained character defined by the water. To the south, it looks out across the Solent toward the Isle of Wight, while the northern end is bridged to the mainland, connecting it to the slopes of Portsdown Hill. Historically, the city has evolved around its deep-water harbour, serving as the home of the Royal Navy for centuries; you can still see this legacy in the huge footprint of the Naval Base and the preserved Victorian tenements in Southsea. Life here tends to revolve around the coastline, with the long pebble beach and open commons at Southsea providing a sense of space that balances the city’s high population density. While the city centre is relatively compact and functional, the various pockets of the island feel quite different, ranging from the narrow, cobblestoned streets of Old Portsmouth to the more exposed, breezy stretches of the eastern shore.
