Tonyrefail sits at the head of the Ely Valley, tucked between the larger hubs of Porth and Talbot Green. Historically a farming hamlet that expanded rapidly during the industrial boom of the 19th century, the village still retains a sense of independence from the higher coal-mining valleys further north. It occupies a geographic transition point where the rugged landscape of the Rhondda begins to level out into the rolling hills of the Vale of Glamorgan. This position makes it relatively practical for getting around; the A4119 offers a straightforward link down to the M4, while the nearby rail connections in Porth provide access to the Cardiff line. Local life tends to revolve around the high street and the expansive grounds of the comprehensive school, which was significantly redeveloped recently as part of a larger investment in the area’s infrastructure. To the west, the high ground of Mynydd y Gilfach offers some decent walking routes and views that stretch right across the Bristol Channel on a clear day.
