Nestled in the Cwm Clydach valley just a few miles north of Pontypridd, Ynysybwl is a village defined by its steep geography and its transition from a bustling coal hub to a quiet residential base. Locally known as ‘The Bwl,’ the village grew rapidly in the 1880s to serve Lady Windsor Colliery, and while the pit closed in 1988, the layout of the neat stone terraces still follows the contours of the hills. It is a linear settlement, bordered closely by the Llanwynno forestry, which offers miles of rugged walking and mountain biking trails right on the doorstep. Practical life centers around the primary school and a handful of local shops and pubs along Robert Street, though for major supermarkets and rail links to Cardiff, most residents make the ten-minute drive down to Pontypridd. It is a place where the air feels notably different from the valley floor, sitting higher up and feeling more secluded, yet remaining functionally connected to the wider Rhondda Cynon Taf transport corridor.
