Griffithstown sits just south of Pontypool in Torfaen, occupying a steady slope between the Afon Lwyd and the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal. Named after Henry Griffiths, the station master who oversaw its development in the 1870s, it grew as a quintessential railway town to serve the nearby Great Western Railway yards. Even today, the layout of the streets and the presence of the Griffithstown Railway Museum reflect that industrial heritage. It’s a practical location for daily life, centered around a compact high street on Windsor Road that provides the essentials, and it’s home to the County Hospital. The geography keeps you close to the water; you can follow the canal towpath north towards Abergavenny or south for miles, while the nearby A4042 provides a direct link down to Newport and the M4 for those traveling further afield. It has a settled, established feel, distinct from the newer developments in Cwmbran, while still being part of that wider South Wales valley landscape.
