Wembury sits on a rugged stretch of the South Hams coastline, just south of Plymouth but separated from the city by the natural boundary of the River Plym and the woods of the Saltram Estate. The village is effectively split between the inland residential hub and the beach area, which is famous for its slate rockpools and the iconic Great Mewstone - a triangular island that has served as a prison and a private residence in centuries past. Life here is dictated largely by the geography; the National Trust manages much of the surrounding cliffs, ensuring the South West Coast Path remains the primary artery for walkers heading toward the Yealm Estuary. While the village has grown with a mix of mid-century and modern housing, it retains a quiet, functional character centred around the primary school, the local shop, and the 11th-century Church of St Werburgh, which stands remarkably close to the sea spray. It’s a place where the weather is felt acutely, and while the lanes are narrow and can become congested with visitors in the height of summer, the rest of the year offers a steady, wind-swept pace of life defined by the tides.
