Peterlee is a town of distinct character, established in 1948 as one of the post-war "New Towns" designed to provide high-quality housing for the mining communities of County Durham. Unlike the traditional red-brick villages nearby, its layout was heavily influenced by modernist architecture and the vision of artist Victor Pasmore, whose abstract "Apollo Pavilion" still stands as a focal point in the Sunny Blunts area. Geographically, it occupies a high plateau between the city of Durham and the North Sea coast, meaning the terrain is relatively flat but often catches a bracing breeze off the water. The town is defined by its abundant green space; it was built around the wooded ravines of Castle Eden Dene, a National Nature Reserve that offers miles of deep, limestone gorge trails right on the doorstep of the residential streets. For getting around, the A19 runs directly along the town’s western edge, providing a straightforward primary link for those commuting north toward Sunderland or south toward Middlesbrough and Teesside.
