Orpington sits on the southeastern edge of Greater London, where the suburban sprawl of the capital begins to give way to the North Downs. Historically a Kentish village centered around the source of the River Cray, it experienced rapid growth in the 20th century primarily due to its position on the main railway line into Charing Cross and Victoria. Today, the town is defined by a mix of mid-century residential streets and more established pockets like the Priory, a medieval hall house that now provides a quiet parkland escape from the busy High Street. While the town centre is a practical hub for shopping and local services, much of Orpington’s character lies in its proximity to the Green Belt; you can be at the shops in the morning and walking through the ancient woodland of High Elms Country Park by the afternoon. It remains an area of transition, functioning as a well-connected London borough while retaining the practical, slower pace of the Kent countryside.
