Burscough is a substantial, working village positioned on the edge of the West Lancashire mosslands, just north of Ormskirk. Its layout and identity are defined by its dual waterways - the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and the Rufford Branch - which meet at the historic Burscough Wharf. Unlike many nearby villages that serve purely as sleeper suburbs, Burscough retains a distinct sense of industry and self-sufficiency, evidenced by the independent shops along the A59 and the busy professional community at the converted canalside buildings. The geography is famously flat, making it a popular spot for walkers and cyclists, and it is home to Martin Mere, a major wetland nature reserve that sits on the village's fringe. One of its most practical features is its two separate railway stations, Burscough Bridge and Burscough Junction, which provide direct links to Manchester, Southport, Preston, and Liverpool, making it one of the best-connected rural spots in the region.
