Uppermill sits in the steep-sided Tame Valley, serving as the primary hub for the group of villages known as Saddleworth. While it technically falls within the metropolitan borough of Oldham, it remains geographically and culturally distinct, separated from the main town by a series of high ridges and open moorland. The village grew around the woollen industry, and you can still see the 18th and 19th-century weavers’ cottages built from local gritstone lining the hillsides. Today, the village centre is concentrated along the High Street and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, which was restored in 2001 and now serves as a central spine for walking and cycling toward Greenfield or Diggle. Practically, it functions as a self-contained community with a library, a small post office, and a variety of longstanding independent shops, though the increase in weekend visitors means parking is often at a premium. The local secondary school, Saddleworth School, recently moved to a new site within the village, and the nearby Greenfield railway station provides the main link for those commuting across the Pennines to Manchester or Leeds.
