Tucked into the steep eastern slopes of the Tame Valley, Grasscroft is one of the distinct villages that makes up the district of Saddleworth. Though officially part of Oldham, it retains a character shaped more by the rugged Pennine landscape than the nearby town centre. The layout of the area is defined by its topography; homes are built tiers-deep into the hillside, offering clear views across the valley toward the dark gritstone edges of Indian’s Head. Historically, the village grew around the local textile industry, evidenced by the old weavers' cottages and the presence of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal that runs along the bottom of the hill. Today, daily life is anchored by its position between Greenfield and Uppermill, providing easy access to the railway station for the trans-Pennine line and the open expanses of Dovestone Reservoir. It is a quiet, residential pocket where the weather can change quickly as it blows in from the moors, and where the transition from suburb to open countryside happens in the space of a few uphill streets.
