Nuneaton is a traditional market town in northern Warwickshire, positioned almost exactly at the center of England. It grew around a 12th-century Benedictine nunnery - the ruins of which still stand at Abbey Church - and later became a powerhouse of the ribbon-weaving and coal-mining industries. Today, it is perhaps most famous as the childhood home of the novelist George Eliot, whose descriptions of local life in the 19th century were deeply rooted in the town’s landscape. Geographically, it is well-placed for those who need to travel, with the West Coast Main Line providing a direct rail link to London in about an hour and the M6 and M69 motorways nearby. Life here tends to revolve around the town centre’s pedestrianized market, which still runs every Wednesday and Saturday, and the expansive greenery of Riversley Park. While it has seen significant post-war development, the town retains a straightforward, unpretentious character, surrounded by the rolling landscape of the North Warwickshire countryside.
