Taverham sits about six miles northwest of Norwich, tucked into a bend of the River Wensum. Historically, the village was defined by the local paper mill, which famously produced the paper for the *Oxford English Dictionary* before closing in 1899; today, that industrial heritage has given way to a largely residential character. It functions as a substantial, well-served community rather than a quiet hamlet, with a mix of mid-century housing and newer pockets integrated around a busy main road. The landscape is notably green, with the Marriott’s Way - a long-distance trail following a former railway line - providing a direct, wooded route for cyclists and walkers heading towards the city or deeper into the Norfolk countryside. While it has its own schools, a library, and several clusters of shops, there is a distinct sense of space here, particularly towards the water meadows and the neighbouring parkland of Ringland Hills. It’s the kind of place where the transition from suburban convenience to genuine rural river valley happens almost imperceptibly.
