Hingham sits about fourteen miles west of Norwich, positioned just off the B1108. It is often mistake for a village, but its historical status as a market town is reflected in the grand Georgian architecture that frames its two distinct central squares, Fairland and the Market Place. This spacious layout is a legacy of the town’s prosperity during the 18th century when it was a social hub for the local gentry. Historically, it is most notable for its 17th-century ties to the United States; many residents, including ancestors of Abraham Lincoln, emigrated from here to help establish Hingham, Massachusetts. Today, it remains a practical working community centered around the 14th-century St Andrew’s Church and a handful of independent businesses, including a local butcher, a small primary school, and a traditional pub. While it offers a quiet, rural atmosphere surrounded by farmland, its proximity to the A47 and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital makes it a functional base for those who need to commute into the city or further afield into the county.
