Skewen sits on the lower slopes of Drumau Mountain, overlooking the Neath Valley and stretching down towards the coastal plains. Historically, the village was a powerhouse of the industrial revolution, shaped by the massive Llandarcy oil refinery and the local coal mines, though today it has settled into a much quieter residential rhythm. Geographically, it is a practical spot; you have the Crymlyn Burrows and the Bog nature reserve nearby for walking, yet the village itself serves as a vital link between Neath and Swansea. It is self-contained with its own high street of independent shops and traditional pubs, and the commuter links are hard to beat, with the M4 motorway running right past us and Skewen railway station providing a direct line to Cardiff and London. It’s the kind of place where the Victorian stone terrace cottages of the old colliery workers now sit alongside newer developments, all connected by the steep, winding hills that offer clear views across the Bristol Channel on a good day.
