Mountain Ash, or *Aberpennar* in Welsh, sits in the heart of the Cynon Valley, roughly 20 miles north of Cardiff. Unlike some of the steeper valley towns, it feels a bit broader here, with the town centre laid out along the valley floor between the River Cynon and the hills of the Llanwonno forested uplands. Its growth was driven entirely by the 19th-century coal industry, particularly the deep navigation pits, and you can still see that heritage in the solid rows of stone terraces that climb the lower slopes. It is a practical place to live; the A4059 provides a direct link toward the A470 for those heading south, and the railway station on the Aberdare line makes the commute to the city relatively straightforward. Locally, it’s best known as the home of the Nos Galan Road Races, an annual event held on New Year's Eve that draws thousands to the streets to commemorate the legendary runner Guto Nyth Brân. While the heavy industry is long gone, the town remains a functional hub for the surrounding villages, with a traditional high street focused around the Victorian town hall and the statue of Guto himself.
