Acklington is a quiet, linear village in mid-Northumberland, situated about ten miles north of Morpeth and just a short distance inland from the coast at Amble. It is a place defined largely by its farming heritage and its position on the East Coast Main Line, though the small railway station now operates on a very limited stopping service. At the heart of the community is the parish church of St John the Divine and the village hall, while the local pub, the railway-themed Northumbrian Arms, sits at the eastern end of the village. The geography here is gently undulating, offering open views across the Coquet Valley towards the Cheviot Hills in the west. Historically, the area was tied to the Duke of Northumberland’s estate, and that traditional, rural character remains today, even with the presence of the nearby HM Prison Acklington (now part of HMP Northumberland) which occupies the site of a former Second World War airfield to the south. It remains a practical base for those who value a rural setting that stays well-connected to the A1 and the market towns nearby.
