Merriott is a substantial, active village in South Somerset, situated just north of Crewkerne and a few miles from the Dorset border. Historically, it was a centre for the canvas and sailcloth industry, which explains the scale of many of the Hamstone buildings that line the main streets. Unlike some smaller hamlets nearby, it functions as a self-contained community with its own pharmacy, a local butcher, and a small supermarket that stocks most daily essentials. The village sits in a landscape of rolling hills and former orchards, with the Parrett Trail passing nearby for those who value long-distance walking routes. While it has grown over the years with some newer developments, it retains a distinct sense of place, supported by a busy village hall and two pubs - the Kings Head and the Swan - which serve as the main social anchors. It is a practical location for those who need access to the London-Exeter rail line at Crewkerne station, yet it remains firmly rooted in the quiet, rural character of the West Country.
