Benwick sits in a quiet, low-lying pocket of the Cambridgeshire Fens, about seven miles southwest of March. It’s an island village in a literal sense, built on a patch of high ground - an outcrop of Kimmeridge Clay - that rises above the surrounding peat and silt of the burnt-earth landscape. Life here is defined by the water; the Old River Nene runs right along the village’s northern edge, and the High Street follows the gentle curve of the riverbank. Historically, this was a place of river trade and brickmaking, though today it is primarily a farming community. The geography is strikingly flat, offering huge open skies and miles of straight drainage dykes that lead out toward Whittlesey and Ramsey. It’s a self-contained spot with a primary school and a local pub, where the pace is dictated more by the seasons and the water levels than by the bustle of the nearby market towns.
