Loughton sits in a fortunate spot where the edge of east London meets the dense, ancient woodland of Epping Forest. Because the town is flanked by this protected green belt, it has kept a distinct boundary that prevents it from simply merging into the neighbouring suburbs. Most of the daily activity GAO centres on the High Road, a long stretch of independent shops and cafes that runs parallel to the Roding Valley. Historically, the arrival of the railway in the 1850s transformed it from a small village into a popular retreat for naturalists and city workers alike - a character it still retains today. Depending on which end of town you find yourself in, you are either a few minutes' walk from the Central Line, which connects directly to the City and West End, or right on the doorstep of the forest trails at High Beach. It is a practical location for those who need reliable transport links but want the immediate headspace that comes with having thousands of acres of woodland just up the hill.
