Looe is a town clearly defined by its geography, split into East and West by a steep-sided valley and a tidal river that dictates the pace of daily life. Connected by a Victorian bridge, the two sides offer different characters: East Looe is the commercial hub with its maze of narrow streets, working fish quay, and sandy beach, while West Looe tends to be quieter, climbing steeply up the hillside to provide vantage points over the Banjo Pier and the offshore nature reserve of Looe Island. It remains one of the few places in Cornwall with a truly active fishing fleet, meaning the harbour is a functional workspace rather than just a scenic backdrop. Living here involves navigating the practicalities of a coastal landscape; houses are often built into the rock, parking is limited in the older quarters, and the high spring tides are a constant logistical consideration for those on the water’s edge. Beyond the town walls, the South West Coast Path and the Looe Valley railway line provide reliable links to the surrounding oak-wooded creeks and the wider rail network at Liskeard.
