Scampton is a quiet, split-level village situated five miles north of Lincoln, defined by its position on the limestone escarpment known as the Cliff. It is essentially divided into two distinct parts: the ancient village nestled on the slopes, and the expansive former RAF base on the plateau above. The village itself is characterized by local limestone cottages and the historic Dambusters Inn, which serves as a reminder of the area’s significant role during the Second World War as the home of 617 Squadron. To the west, the village overlooks the vast, flat expanse of the Till Valley, while the A15 provides a direct, straightforward link into the city or further north towards the M180. While the future of the airfield remains a subject of ongoing local discussion and planning, the village retains a remarkably steady, rural character, centered around the primary school and the church of St John the Baptist, where the graves of Commonwealth and German airmen lie side by side.
