Whetstone is a well-established village in the Blaby District, situated about five miles south of Leicester’s city centre. While it has grown considerably over the decades, it manages to retain its own identity separate from the city, largely thanks to the green wedge provided by the River Soar and the Grand Union Canal to its west. Historically, the village was a centre for the hosiery and footwear industries, and it famously became the site where Sir Frank Whittle developed the jet engine at the Power Jets factory during the 1940s. Today, it is a practical location for those who work in the city or at the nearby Meridian Business Park, with easy access to the M1 and M69 motorways. The village centre offers a mix of small independent shops and traditional pubs, complimented by larger retail parks just a short drive away in Fosse Park and Enderby. It is a largely residential area defined by a blend of old cottages near the church and extensive twentieth-century housing, all within walking distance of the open countryside towards Willoughby Waterleys.
