Great Glen sits about six miles southeast of Leicester, nestled in the valley of the River Sence. It’s a place defined largely by its topography; the village is bypassed by the A6, which has preserved a sense of separation from the city’s urban sprawl while keeping the commute straightforward. Historically, it was a vital stop on the old coaching route between London and Leicester, a legacy still visible in the layout of the village and the presence of several longstanding pubs like the Greyhound and the Royal Oak. The village hub centres around a core of traditional brick buildings, a post office, and a few small shops, while the surrounding landscape is marked by the undulating fields of High Leicestershire. For those who spend time outdoors, the Grand Union Canal passes just a short distance to the west, providing a level path through the neighbouring countryside. It’s a practical location that manages to retain a distinct village identity, supported by its own primary school and the presence of Leicester Grammar School on its northern edge.
