Earl Shilton sits on a high ridge about ten miles southwest of Leicester, a position that gives parts of the town surprisingly clear views over the surrounding Soar Valley. It is an old settlement with a distinctive industrial heritage; while the medieval castle that once overlooked the area is now just a series of grassy mounds known as Castle Hill, the town’s real character was formed by the hosiery and boot-making trades. You can still see the traces of this history in the architecture of the older terraced streets and former factory buildings. Today, life tends to center around the long, linear high street which holds a mix of independent shops and essential services, and the town effectively merges into neighboring Barwell to the west. It’s well-placed for getting around the East Midlands, being close to the A47 and within easy reach of Hinckley, but it manages to keep a firm sense of its own identity, separate from the larger urban sprawl.
