Nestled at the foot of the South Downs between Lancing and Worthing, Sompting is a village of two distinct halves. To the north, the terrain climbs toward the chalk grasslands of the National Park, dominated by the iconic Saxon tower of St Mary’s Church with its unique Rhenish helm spire - the only one of its kind in England. The southern part of the village settles into the coastal plain, where the landscape is characterized by a mix of long-standing nurseries and residential streets that feel a world away from the busy A27 corridor that bisects the parish. It remains a place where the rural history of the Sussex Downs meets the practicalities of coastal living; you have the convenience of nearby supermarkets and the Lancing railway station just over the border, yet you can be walking along the ancient bridleways of Steep Down within minutes. It is a quiet, functional community that has managed to retain its own identity despite the gradual outward spread of its larger neighbours.
