Knutsford sits on the southern edge of Greater Manchester, acting as a gateway where the Cheshire Plain begins to open up. It is a town defined largely by its geography; it is squeezed between the sprawling 1,000-acre Tatton Park to the north and the Moor to the south, which gives the centre a compact, linear feel. The narrow, one-way streets of the Bottom Street (King Street) and Top Street (Princess Street) still follow the medieval layout, lined with a mix of timber-framed buildings and the notable Italianate architecture of Richard Harding Watt. Practically speaking, it is exceptionally well-connected, positioned just off Junction 19 of the M6 and on the mid-Cheshire railway line between Manchester and Chester, though this means the town deals with a fair amount of through-traffic. While it has evolved into a busy hub of independent shops and restaurants, its identity remains tied to its rural roots and the long-standing May Day traditions that take place on the Heath, an expansive common land that keeps the town from feeling entirely suburban.
