Knottingley is a town shaped by its industrial grit and its position on the banks of the River Aire. Historically, it was a vital hub for glassmaking and pottery, but its real significance came from the local limestone and its role as a key inland port. Even today, the presence of the Aire and Calder Navigation defines much of the geography here, linking the town to the broader canal network. It’s a practical place, well-connected by the three railway stations in the immediate vicinity and its proximity to the A1(M) and M62 interchange, which makes it a strategic base for getting around West Yorkshire. While the skyline was dominated by the cooling towers of Ferrybridge power station for decades, the town is currently in a period of transition following their demolition. It remains a straightforward, resilient community with a layout that still reflects its heritage as a collection of smaller settlements that gradually merged along the river and the road to Pontefract.
