Cowling sits on the edge of the South Pennines, tucked into the Aire Valley just a few miles west of Keighley and close to the North Yorkshire-Lancashire border. It is a traditional mill village, defined by its gritstone cottages and the prominent landmark of Wainman’s Pinnacle, which looks down from the moors above. Historically, the village thrived on the textile industry, and the long rows of weaved-style housing still follow the contours of the main road that climbs toward the hills. This is high, exposed country, and the weather here can be more rugged than in the lower valley, but that comes with the benefit of the Pennine Way passing directly through the village. For daily life, there is a primary school and a few local shops, though for the railway or larger supermarkets, most people head down to Cross Hills or Keighley. It’s a place where the landscape feels very immediate; you can step out of your front door and be on the open moors within minutes.
