Claydon sits just north of Ipswich, separated from the town by the A14 but retaining a distinct village identity. Historically, its growth was tied to the chalk pits and the River Gipping, which marks the village’s southwestern boundary and offers some of the best walking routes in the area along the old towpaths. It is a practical place to live; the village centre is well-served by a parade of shops, a surgery, and two pubs - The Greyhound and The Crown - which act as the main social hubs. The local schools, including the high school, serve many of the surrounding smaller parishes, making the village busier during term time mornings. Architecturally, it’s a mix of timber-framed houses near the old church of St Peter and more modern residential developments that expanded in the latter half of the 20th century. Its location is its biggest draw for many, as you can be on the dual carriageway heading towards Bury St Edmunds or Felixstowe in minutes, yet the rural landscape of the Gipping Valley is right on the doorstep.
