Ilkeston sits on a prominent hill between Derby and Nottingham, looking out across the Erewash Valley. It’s a town defined by its industrial bones - once a hub for coal, iron, and lace - but today it feels more like a practical hub for the East Midlands. The skyline is still marked by the spire of St Mary’s Church, and the town retains a traditional market-town layout with a spacious market place at its summit. Geographically, it’s well-placed for anyone needing to get around; the reopening of the railway station a few years ago re-established a direct link to the Midland Main Line, and the M1 is only a short drive away. While the heavy industry has largely moved on, the town is bordered by surprisingly green pockets, with the Nutbrook Trail and the Erewash Canal providing long, flat routes for walking or cycling right on the doorstep. It’s a straightforward, unpretentious place where the local dialect is still strong and the steep walk up the hill from the station is just a standard part of daily life.
