Straddling the old Roman Ermine Street and the modern A1, Sawtry serves as a substantial, self-contained bridge between the market towns of Huntingdon and Peterborough. It is one of the larger villages in Cambridgeshire, and its layout still reflects its history as a vital coaching stop, though today it is perhaps best known for its proximity to the Great Fen restoration project. Most of the practicalities are managed within the village itself: there is a working butcher, a small supermarket, and several pubs, alongside both primary and secondary schooling that creates a natural hub for the community. While the landscape is characterized by the flat, expansive skies of the Fens to the east, the village sits on slightly higher ground, providing a sense of elevation and openness. It is a functional, busy place that has grown considerably over the decades, yet it retains a distinct village identity separate from the larger urban centres just a fifteen-minute drive away.
