Skirlaugh sits roughly nine miles northeast of Hull, positioned where the Holderness plain begins to roll slightly towards the coast. It’s a linear village, split into North and South Skirlaugh by the Lambwath Stream, which historically marked a boundary between two separate parishes. The most striking landmark is St Augustine’s Church, a fine example of Perpendicular Gothic architecture built in the late 14th century by Walter Skirlaw, who rose from being a local boy to become the Bishop of Durham. Today, the village functions as a quiet commuter hub for the city, but it retains its own identity with two pubs, a primary school, and several local shops. Life here is defined by the surrounding arable landscape - it is a place of big East Yorkshire skies and flat, open fields, providing a real sense of space while remaining within a twenty-minute drive of the practical amenities and employment centres of Hull and Beverley.
