Hornsea is a classic East Riding seaside town that sits between the North Sea and Hornsea Mere, Yorkshire’s largest natural lake. Historically a fishing village that expanded with the arrival of the railway in the mid-19th century, the town today feels self-contained and steady, centered around a traditional high street of independent shops that leads down to a shingle beach and long promenade. Geography plays a major role here; the town is bordered by the Mere to the west - a haven for birdwatching and sailing - and the rolling agricultural land of Holderness to the north and south. While the shoreline is subject to the natural coastal erosion characteristic of this stretch of the coast, the town itself remains a resilient hub for the surrounding rural villages, connected to nearby Hull and Beverley by the A1035 and A165. It is a place defined by the contrast between the open horizon of the sea and the sheltered, wooded walks around the water’s edge.
