Gittisham is a quiet, tucked-away village in East Devon, situated just a couple of miles southwest of Honiton. It sits within the Vale of Gittisham, where the houses follow the line of a small brook that eventually joins the River Otter. The village is notable for its consistency; most of the older cottages are built of cob and thatch, and it has largely escaped the modern sprawling development seen elsewhere in the county. While it feels secluded, it is practically located for access to the A30, and Honiton’s mainline railway station is close by for links to Exeter and London Waterloo. Historically, the village has long been associated with the Combe Estate, and the Elizabethan manor house, Combe House, still stands on the wooded slopes overlooking the parish. The church of St Michael’s dates back to the 14th century and serves as the village's focal point, alongside a small primary school. Life here is dictated more by the surrounding farmland and the steep, wooded ridges of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty than by the bustle of the nearby market towns. It remains a place where the geography - narrow lanes and deep valleys - has preserved a very traditional Devon character.
