Holyhead sits on Holy Island at the far western tip of Anglesey, functioning as a busy gateway between Wales and Ireland. It’s a place defined largely by its geography; the town grew around its deep-water port, sheltered from the Irish Sea by the massive Victorian breakwater which stretches nearly two miles into the bay. Life here is influenced by the landscape of Holyhead Mountain - the highest point in the county - which offers clear views across to the Wicklow Mountains on a sharp day and provides a network of coastal paths reaching out to the South Stack lighthouse. While the town centre provides the essential amenities, including the primary rail terminus for the North Wales Coast Line, it is the immediate proximity to the Anglesey Coastal Path and the rugged cliffs of the RSPB reserve that characterises the area. It feels like an outpost, shaped by maritime history and the Roman walls of Caer Gybi, yet it remains a practical, working hub with a direct, fast connection to the mainland via the A55.
