Herne Bay sits on the north Kent coast, about seven miles east of Whitstable and roughly 60 miles from London. It grew significantly during the Victorian era as a purpose-built seaside resort, and that heritage is still visible in the architecture along the seafront and the 80-foot clock tower, which remains one of the oldest of its kind in the UK. Unlike the rugged cliffs further east, the terrain here is relatively flat, making the long promenade popular for walking and cycling towards the Reculver towers. The town centre serves local needs with a mix of independent shops and supermarkets, while the railway station provides direct links to London Victoria and St Pancras International. For those who prefer the water, the coastline is defined by its shingle beaches and a pier that, although shorter than its historical predecessor, still serves as a hub for local crabbing and community events. It’s a place that feels settled, offering a quieter, more functional pace of life than some of its more tourist-heavy neighbours.
