Hemel Hempstead sits in a gap in the Chiltern Hills, where the Gade and Bulbourne rivers meet about 25 miles northwest of central London. While it grew significantly as a post-war New Town, its roots are much older; the Old Town high street remains a steep, cobbled stretch of Tudor, Georgian, and Victorian architecture tucked away from the modern centre. Geographically, it’s a town of distinct neighbourhoods separated by steep hills and belts of woodland, giving it a much greener feel than many other commuter hubs. The Grand Union Canal cuts through the valley floor, providing a flat walking route toward Apsley and Berkhamsted, which contrasts with the vertical scale of the Snow Centre on the hill above. Its position alongside the M1 and M25 makes it a practical base for getting around, yet you can be out in open Hertfordshire countryside or the ancient woodland of Ashridge in a matter of minutes.
