Hawes sits at the head of Wensleydale, positioned about 850 feet above sea level, making it one of the highest market towns in England. It functions as a primary hub for the Upper Dales, providing essential services to a wide catchment area of outlying hamlets and farms. Life here is still largely dictated by the rhythm of the livestock auction mart in the centre of town and the traditional Tuesday market, which has been held since a charter was granted in 1699. While many know it as the home of Wensleydale Creamery, residents rely on the town for its practical amenities, including a primary school, a local medical practice, and a surprisingly diverse range of independent shops that stock more than just tourist goods. The weather can be robust, as the town is overlooked by the high fells of Great Shunner Fell and Wether Fell, but the community is self-sufficient and well-connected by the A684, even if the nearest railway station is now six miles away at Garsdale.
