Hastings is a town of distinct layers, anchored by a steep sandstone coastline and a maritime history that remains visible today. To the east lies the Old Town, tucked into a narrow valley between the hills, where timber-framed buildings line narrow passages known locally as ‘twittens.’ This area is still home to the UK’s largest beach-launched fishing fleet, defined by the tall, black wooden net shops that stand on the shingle Stade. Moving westward along the seafront, the character shifts toward the Victorian and Edwardian architecture of the town centre and St Leonards-on-Sea, which offers broader residential streets and a long, double-decker promenade. Geographically, the town is somewhat isolated by its hilly terrain, with the High Weald to the north and the sea to the south, creating a self-contained atmosphere. While many know the date 1066, the actual battlefield is several miles inland; modern Hastings is more defined by its steep funicular railways, its pebble beaches, and a climate that often feels a few degrees milder than the rest of East Sussex.
