Harlow is a town of two distinct halves, where the historic roots of an Essex village meet the structured vision of the post-war New Town movement. Located just off the M11 corridor and roughly 30 minutes from Liverpool Street by rail, it occupies a practical spot on the border with Hertfordshire, bounded by the River Stort to the north. What sets it apart from many of its neighbours is the "Green Wedge" system - Sir Frederick Gibberd’s original design ensures that wide corridors of parkland and brooks weave between the residential patches, meaning you are rarely more than a short walk from a cycle path or open space like the 160-acre Town Park. While the modern centre is a hub of high-street convenience and houses an impressive collection of over 100 public sculptures, Old Harlow retains a quieter, more traditional character with its period cottages and independent shops. It is a town built on the principle of self-sufficiency, offering a mix of mid-century architecture and newer developments, all supported by a strong foundation of local schools and a well-established healthcare network.
