Grays sits on the north bank of the Thames, a position that has defined its character from its medieval fishing roots through to its growth as a Victorian industrial hub. Geographically, it is the largest town in the Thurrock unitary authority, occupying a stretch of riverside landscape that transitions from the chalk pits of its industrial past - some of which have been repurposed into green spaces and nature reserves - into a busy, functional town centre. The skyline is famously marked by the State Cinema, a Grade II* listed Art Deco landmark, and the nearby Queen Elizabeth II Bridge at Dartford. For getting around, the town is exceptionally well-connected; it sits on the C2C rail line, putting Fenchurch Street about 35 minutes away, while the proximity to the M25 and A13 provides straightforward road access to the rest of Essex and Kent. Life here tends to revolve around the river and the town’s practical amenities, with the vast shopping and leisure complex at Lakeside just a few minutes' drive or a short bus ride away.
